Suspended between sacred and mystery: Eboli and Campagna
Between the mountain range of Mounts Picentini and the river Sele, there are the two towns of Eboli and Campagna. Very ancient are the origins of Eboli, dating to the third millennium Before Christ, when the first human settlements colonized the surrounding hills and mountains. Moreover, the ancient Eburum, nowadays known as Eboli, was an important “municipium” in Roman times, enjoying special rights and autonomy. As evidence of its past, the old town of Eboli is still one of the most evocative, extensive and stratified (in it coexist more than one architectural style) of the province of Salerno, with the imposing castle of Lombard and Norman period (one of the greatest of the province of Salerno) and numerous churches and monasteries. Furthermore, a little further southward, there is Campagna, a village that knew its most important phase in the seventeenth century, while “decayed” the luster of nearby Eboli. The Old Town of Campagna, very well preserved, has the appearance of a charming seventeenth-century village, and extends itself concentrically around the imposing and impressive Cathedral. Below this, you can visit the fascinating crypts of the Cathedral, crossing the bridge that separates this from the river Tenza, and in other churches as well (because most of them still keep accessible and preserved the catacombs). Campagna was ruled by the illustrious princes of Monaco and then by the Bishop Juan Caramuel Y Lobkowitz, intellectual and religious acknowledged as the discoverer of the binary logic system. Furthermore, in both the municipalities, you can travel into several hiking trails that connect to the surrounding peaks, including, famous for its superb landscapes, the Mount Polveracchio, an amazing WWF Oasis in the municipal area of Campagna.
